Wikipedia Liquid Galaxy Mashup

Preliminary
This proposal is a fruit from cross pollination between GSoC project. Back in 2013 some mentors and students of the Liquid Galaxy project visited Wikimedia offices in San Francisco, meeting Quim Gil, Project Manager, Wikimedia Foundation GSoC responsible and old friend of Andreu Ibanez, my mentor in my career final project.
They talked about the possibility of doing this project using Wikimedia backend.
Andreu, Quim, Ismael and Joan at Wikimedia San Francisco Offices.

Quim explained them that all 14+millions of wikidata articles can be accessed with the API to Wikidata. “Wikidata is a free linked database that can be read and edited by both humans and machines.”
And as they say, all data is “Free. The data in Wikidata is published under the Creative Commons Public Domain Dedication 1.0 https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Wikidata:Main_Page

They have all Wikipedia articles and some other data such as “pictures and media of the day”

Project description

The main aim of this project is to create a link to Wikimedia backend and the Liquid Galaxy.
The link will allow us to show on the LG monitors, for example, the location of the last uploaded article in Wikipedia and a bubble with its information.

To achieve this goal I plan to develop a fluid Android apk. The Android apk application will handle the connection with the API, transformation of the data and sending to the rig, through a SSH tunnel by wifi. No programming on the rig is needed.

It is also possible to get the Wikipedia data by using the DBpedia project and other tools for that Wikipedia’s data extraction.

My idea is to query the API with a time interval the user decides and sets, and show up the info on screens. The apk will have also a UI, where the rig user will be able to filter data by:
  • Country
  • Language
  • Timeline

Linked technologies

Android, SSH, JSON, XML, Lua, Wikimedia API.

Values for Liquid Galaxy community

  • A great informative tool for visitors
  • A screensaver like tool for having the liquid galaxies always doing stuff.
  • A cross pollination GSoC projects
